We cannot control our future without knowing our past.

The Legacy is pleased to announce the new project “Adopt a Hero“, born with the intention of widely promoting the men and women who through their actions achieved goals beyond their own interests, benefiting many others of their time and for the years to come.

The definition of a hero/heroine according to the dictionary of the Spanish Royal Academy:

1. A person who performs a selfless action for a noble cause.
2. An illustrious person famous for his or her deeds or virtues.
3. A prominent character in a poem or story who acts in a courageous and daring manner.
4. A person who someone has special admiration for.

This is a good guidance of our objectives and ties in well with the proposals suggested for Heroes The Legacy, which will have the following unique trait; they will be Spaniards linked with the Spanish legacy in the United States of America. We want to bring out of oblivion the historical characters who succeeded in achieving this standing, and who claim their rightful place in history.

You are probably already aware of the in initial nominees and if you have visited our traveling Exhibition you‘ll definitely have some information on them: King Ferdinand of Aragon, Queen Isabella I of Castile, Ponce de León, Commander Alvar Nuñez Cabeza de Vaca, Admiral Pedro Menéndez de Avilés, Captain Francisco Menendez, General Montiano, King Carlos III, Admiral Luis de Cordova, General Bernardo de Gálvez, Admiral Jose Solano y Bote and many more who will be added to the list throughout 2022.

Our project  will also include The Brave The Legacy; the people who in recent years have defended the Spanish legacy: American presidents like John F. Kennedy and Lyndon Johnson, great historians such as Charles Lummis and Herbert Bolton and a long list that we hope to regularly add to.

We want to incorporate educational material for each of them in this project: postcards, videos, articles... so that when you decide to take part in the adoption of one of our heroes you have access to the basic documentation to be able to share their story easily, without myths or unreal tales.

Article 44 of the Spanish Constitution states that the public authorities shall promote and protect access to culture, to which everyone has the right. In particular we are addressing the following institutions; the Ministry of Education and Culture, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, España Global, and Instituto Cervantes.

We are delighted to be cooperating with the city councils of  any  the city  in Spain that show interest in our mission, we will provide them with our materials, knowledge and expertise so they may continue toinclude the material in their actions for the promotion of culture. We are convinced that step  by step we will positively enhance Spain‘s image at home and abroad.

Our history needs to be incorporated into the classroom with a fair and documented account of what happened. We must focus on recounting our achievements, because for too many centuries we have already seen that there will always be someone willing to point out our failings. We need a paradigm shift, a cultural revolution of “the Spanish“, and if our institutions begin this awareness we will reach all levels of society.

Our history is the heritage of each one of us and it is time to get to work. This is a team effort in which every contribution, big or small, counts. This is an unavoidable commitment for our institutions and our political leaders, and it is also the right of Spaniards to be aware of what happened.

We would like to think that in the near future this project will inspire many others who will set  the recovery of the Spanish legacy in motion. Then we can begin a new era for future generations with a truthful account of our footprint in the world, and with the appropriate documentation to support us in the revival of our heroes and feats.

The past and present are shaped by those who will define the future.
We must be aware of the actions of today that will inevitably have an impact on tomorrow.
The promise of a better future is in our hands.

Thank you for 6 years of success.
We will continue to learn and stand up for what belongs to us.
